Description

This is the leading hemisphere of the smallest of Saturn’s main moons. With a diameter of 396 kilometres it is only just large enough to form a spherical shape under its own weight. It is mostly composed of water ice, and is heavily cratered. The large impact crater at left is named Herschel, after the moon’s discoverer. This mosaic is a combination of images taken on 13 February 2010. The high-resolution imagery (left) is from the narrow-angle camera, while the lower resolution imagery (right) is from the wide-angle camera, both on the Cassini spacecraft that is in orbit around Saturn.
